Hackney residents have given the green light to proposals to build a wind turbine on Hackney Marshes. The structure would complement the wind turbine already planned by the Olympic Delivery Authority for Eton Manor in Waltham Forest. The two wind turbines together could generate enough renewable energy to power Hackney's main council buildings and nearly all of its street lighting.

Richmond-upon-Thames has confiscated more than 100 potentially lethal mobile phone and games console chargers. Electrical testers found faults with the chargers' internal wiring which could short circuit electrical equipment and kill or seriously injure people. The chargers, which sell for as little as £4, were found in several shops in the borough after visits from trading standards officers.

Westminster has launched a team of 'super inspectors' with tough enforcement powers to help tidy up the borough's streets in the run up to the London 2012 Games. The team of officers will be on call 24 hours a day to respond to issues including littering, anti-social behaviour, graffiti and dog fouling. They will also work to build relationships with residents to take ownership of their local areas.

Islington is to turn an unused car park in Holloway into 30 new allotments as part of its Edible Islington food growing campaign. The site will feature plots fed by harvested rainwater and paths made from the car park's recycled concrete surface. Residents on the council's allotment waiting list are now being contacted and invited to take up one of the new patches.

Wandsworth is pressing EDF Energy to compensate businesses in Balham after a series of power failures cost the town centre around £250,000. Residents and businesses had complained that EDF was slow in responding to the power cuts between December 28 and January 16, leaving several homes without heating and electricity and forcing Balham train station and businesses to close or pay for expensive generators.
