The winners of the inaugural London Borough of Culture Awards have been announced by the Mayor of London today. Waltham Forest will be the London Borough of Culture in 2019, and Brent will be the London Borough of Culture in 2020. In addition, six boroughs - Barking & Dagenham, Camden, Kingston, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton - will share a pot of £850,000 for landmark projects, which the boroughs highlighted in their entry bids.
Cllr Darren Rodwell, London Councils’ Executive member for city development, said:
“Congratulations to Waltham Forest and Brent for their successful London Borough of Culture bids. They are showcasing the diverse, innovative and inspiring approaches boroughs are taking to supporting and promoting the arts locally.
“However I would also like to pay tribute to all boroughs who participated in the Awards for the high quality of their entries, which have highlighted how boroughs continue to use their resources and ingenuity to develop arts and culture plans that serve local communities and add to the economic, social and cultural value of the capital. We need to build on this energy and their ideas.
“I look forward to seeing what Waltham Forest and Brent achieve during their Borough of Culture tenure, which will no doubt strengthen the capital’s position as an unmissable arts and culture destination.”
