London Councils' response to a speech given by Jeremy Hunt MP, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, outlining the Government's thinking ahead of the social care green paper:
Cllr Ray Puddifoot MBE, London Councils’ Executive member for adult social care, said:
“We agree that a bold and visionary transformation of the health and social care system is long overdue. London’s health and care devolution agenda is prime example of how we are pursuing this.
“Yesterday’s announcements from Jeremy Hunt and the forthcoming Green Paper have the potential to help councils play their part in improving services to deliver high quality care and support for decades to come.
“However, in order to make the transformation meaningful, adult social care must be adequately funded. In London we are already anticipating a £300 million funding shortfall in adult social care between now and 2020.
“Lack of resources is likely to frustrate work to integrate services and explore innovation, which is why we will work with Government to ensure funding levels match the scale of the challenge ahead.”
