Coronavirus school closures - “London boroughs will do all they can to support local schools and families"

In response to government announcements about widespread school closures from Friday onwards, Cllr Peter John OBE, Chair of London Councils, said:

“London’s headteachers, teachers and support staff do a fantastic job providing a top-quality education to millions of children across the capital. Their hard work, dedication and compassion is valued by all of us.

“Coronavirus has presented a huge challenge to London’s schools. We recognise the very real anxiety teachers and parents have for children’s wellbeing and education - especially for those who have exams this year.

“London boroughs will do all they can to support local schools and families. Implementing government’s advice on school closures will not be straightforward and we need urgent clarity on what it will mean in practice.

“We will be working hard over the coming days to make new arrangements, keep parents and teachers informed and ensure all vulnerable children – including those on free school meals – get the support they need.”
